Lunchtime
Lunchtime at Wellstead
Children can either bring a packed lunch or have a hot school lunch, which is provided by the award-winning caterers Hampshire Education Catering. Hampshire Education Catering ethos is about providing tasty food to help children flourish, by providing nutritious food, cooked fresh every day, which is responsibly sourced, giving your children a balanced diet with choices that aid concentration levels and give them energy to focus and to play.
These school lunches cost £3.20 and is payable online or at the office.
School lunches must be paid for on the day or ideally in advance for the week ahead.
However since September 2014, all Key Stage 1 children (Years R, 1 & 2) are offered a hot school lunch FREE OF CHARGE. This is known as the universal infant free school meal (UIFSM).
If you prefer your child to have a packed lunch from home, please send it in a suitable lunch box, clearly marked with the child’s name. Parents are encouraged to pack a healthy meal for their child. We also ask parents not to include nuts in lunchboxes as they pose potential serious risks to health with a number of children in school having nut allergies.
Children are allowed to bring squash or juice in a bottle or carton but this can only be drunk at lunchtime (only plain water can be drunk in class).
Please note that fizzy drinks, thermos flasks and glass bottles or containers of any kind are not allowed in school.
When the children are not eating their lunch, they have the opportunity to use the outdoor space. The children can use any of the areas to play in - there's normally something organised on the MUGA and various small games being played on the playground.
MDSAs
Our experienced team of midday supervisory assistants support the children with all aspects of lunchtimes - inside the hall and outside at play, this includes dealing with minor first aid needs too.

Free School Meals Eligibility
Remember that all children in Years R, 1 and 2 are entitled to the Universal Infant Free School Meal. Registration is not required for UIFSM.
But schools get government funding for all children who meet the standard free meal criteria. The funding is called the Pupil Premium. To let schools get the funding for as many pupils as possible, we encourage parents of children who meet the standard free meal criteria to register. This includes parents of children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.
Your child may be able to get free school meals if you get any of the following:
- Income Support
- income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
- Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
- Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)
