EYFS
EYFS at Wellstead Primary School
At Wellstead Primary School, we are committed to providing a nurturing, stimulating and inclusive learning environment where every child feels valued, safe and is able to develop a strong sense of belonging within their class and the wider school community.
We aim to support every child to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to thrive. Through our Early Years curriculum we strive to:
- Foster positive relationships by developing self-regulation, tolerance, kindness and respect for others, while nurturing self-belief and social confidence.
- Embed our school values so that children understand, embrace and demonstrate these in their everyday learning and interactions.
- Inspire curiosity and creativity by encouraging children to explore, investigate, invent, collaborate and adapt their thinking.
- Promote independence and resilience by empowering children to take ownership of their learning, explore new ideas, solve problems, make connections, take considered risks and embrace challenges.
- Develop confident communicators who can express themselves clearly and meaningfully, listen to others and demonstrate understanding.
- Support physical development through rich opportunities to develop gross and fine motor skills, coordination, control and confidence in movement.
Above all, we want every child to develop a lifelong love of learning, feel proud of their achievements and be equipped with the skills and confidence to take their next steps.
Our Early Years curriculum is carefully designed around the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and a secure understanding of child development. We recognise that every child is unique, with their own interests, strengths and starting points. Our provision is therefore responsive, purposeful and ambitious, ensuring that all children have opportunities to flourish.
At Wellstead, we provide a rich and stimulating environment filled with carefully selected, open-ended resources that encourage children to explore, experiment and engage across all areas of learning. Skilled adults play a vital role in this process, using warm, supportive interactions and thoughtful questioning to extend children's thinking, deepen their understanding and build on their natural curiosity.
Communication and language are central to our curriculum, alongside physical development. We provide language-rich experiences that develop vocabulary, strengthen listening and speaking skills and help children communicate with confidence. Through a wide range of meaningful experiences, children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to succeed, regardless of their starting points.
Physical development is woven throughout our provision, with regular opportunities for children to strengthen both their fine and gross motor skills. We also recognise the importance of outdoor learning in supporting children's emotional, social, physical and cognitive development. Our engaging outdoor environment is available in all seasons and is adapted to reflect the needs, interests and developmental stages of the children.
Throughout their time in EYFS, children experience a carefully balanced approach to learning, including:
- Child-initiated learning and Discovery Time: Opportunities for children to follow their interests, make independent choices and develop their understanding through purposeful play within our high-quality learning environment.
- High-quality adult interactions: Skilled adults recognise and build upon meaningful moments within children's play, using these opportunities to extend learning, introduce new vocabulary and develop understanding.
- Intentional teaching and enhanced provision: Carefully planned adult-led experiences and enhancements that introduce specific learning objectives and extend children's knowledge, skills and interests.
- Whole-class and small-group teaching: Focused teaching sessions, including phonics, that introduce essential knowledge and skills and provide opportunities for practice, consolidation and progression.
As the year progresses, we continually reflect on children's development, interests and needs, adapting our provision and teaching to ensure that learning remains relevant, engaging and appropriately challenging.
At Wellstead Primary School, our bespoke and aspirational Early Years curriculum is underpinned by carefully planned goals and milestones across the reception year. These provide a clear pathway for progression while allowing us to respond to each child's individual development and celebrate their achievements.
By combining purposeful play, high-quality teaching and nurturing relationships, we aim to develop confident, independent and enthusiastic learners who are ready for the next stage of their education in Key Stage One.
Our curriculum is rooted in the school's core learning values, which guide our approach to learning, relationships and personal development. These values help create a shared sense of purpose and encourage every child to become the very best version of themselves.
