Medicines & Illness

Illness in School

If a child becomes unwell during the school day, we will contact parents or carers by telephone or phone call. If a child has a high temperature or is showing symptoms of sickness or diarrhoea, parents or carers will be asked to take them home. Children should remain off school for 48 hours following any episode of sickness or diarrhoea.

For more information about whether to keep your child off school when they are unwell, please follow the links below.

Minor injuries such as cuts, bumps and bruises are treated by our qualified First Aiders. If your child receives a bump to the head, they will be given a wristband to wear home and you will receive an email or a telephone call to keep you informed.

Medicines in School

If your child needs prescribed medication during the school day, parents or carers must complete a consent form detailing the medication, dosage, and when it should be given.

All medication must be brought to the school office for safe storage. On the first day, an adult should deliver the medication and complete a medicine administration form. Please ensure all medication is in its original packaging with the prescription label clearly showing your child’s name and dosage instructions.

We are unable to administer Calpol, Piriton or similar non-prescribed medicines. If your child requires these, you will be contacted and asked to come into school to administer the medication yourself.

Please ensure the school is informed of any medical conditions your child may have so we can support them appropriately.

Infectious Diseases

It is important that you inform the school as soon as possible if your child has an infectious illness so that we are able to stop the spread of infection.  For more information please see:  Public Health Agency - Guidance on infection control in schools and other childcare settings

The Headteacher has the final decision about if it is appropriate for a child to return to school following an infectious illness.
