ELG (Early Learning Goals)
The level of progress children should be expected to have attained by the end of the EYFS is defined by seventeen Early Learning Goals, which are spread across the seven Areas of Learning and Development. The EYFS ELGs go hand in hand with the EYFS outcomes that can guide parents and practitioners on the level of developmental progress that their child is making.
Throughout their time in the Reception Year our children partake in an ambitious curriculum which is designed in a sequential way to ensure progress towards the end of reception goals. The EYFS framework 7 areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected. However, 3 areas known as the prime areas are seen as particularly important for igniting curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building children’s capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.
The prime areas are:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
The prime areas are strengthened and applied through 4 specific areas:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
