Starting School

Starting school is an important and scary time for both children and their parents. At Wellstead Primary School we do our upmost to make this transition as easy as possible.

If your child was born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, they are due to start school in the school year beginning September 2019. Admission to a Year R class is not automatic. You can apply online via Hampshire County Council or call them on 0300 5551377 for an application form together with an admissions brochure and a directory of Hampshire schools. Application opens from 1st November 2018 to 15th January 2019 and are now closed and offers letters should have been received by parents.

We are happy to welcome all our new starters for September 2019, here is some upcoming information that you may find useful:

Pre-entry visits

Your child will start their induction into school life during the summer term 2019.

Before your child starts school, all parents / carers are invited to an induction evening at 5:30pm on Wednesday 12th June to meet the Early Years’ team.  This meeting will provide you with information about your child starting school and give you an opportunity to raise any questions you may have.

Your child will also be invited to attend two further sessions in school. The first session is an afternoon session from 1:30pm to 3pm on Wednesday 26th June. This is a session for children and parents to attend a stay and play afternoon of activities.

The second session will be a morning session from 9:15am to 11:30am on Wednesday 3rd July. For this session, the children will be split into groups of 15 (as per their entry groupings) and will spend an hour in school (9:15 – 10:15am or 10:30 – 11:30am). Parents will not be required to stay in school with your child for this session.

Following on from this, your child's class teacher would also like the opportunity to meet with you and your child on a 1:1 basis at your home. The times for these visits will be made with you at the induction meeting on the 12th June and will take place during the week beginning 4th September.

We will also host a Teddy Bear’s Picnic on Monday 9th September at 12pm. This will before you and your child to attend and will involve a story session and the opportunity for you to look around the classroom with your child.

As per our arrangements last year, we will continue to offer a ‘phased entry’ to the school year. Each class will be split into an A and B group and will share a week of mornings and a week of afternoons as per the timetable below before starting full time on Monday 23rd September.

During the induction evening, you will be informed whether your child is in Barley or Chickpea class and in group A or B.
